The Western Australian Practical Driving Assessment
The Western Australian Practical Driving Assessment, commonly called the PDA, determines whether you are ready to drive safely without supervision. It is not simply a test of isolated manoeuvres. The assessor considers how well you control the vehicle, apply the road rules, fit in with traffic, and identify and respond to hazards.
Before you book
You should only book when you can drive consistently and safely without frequent instructions from your supervisor.
For a first car licence, you must generally be at least 17 years old, have held your learner’s permit for at least six months and have passed the Hazard Perception Test. If you are under 25, you must also record at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including five hours between sunset and sunrise. Learners aged 25 or older applying for their first C-class licence are generally exempt from the logbook requirement.

What happens during the assessment
The complete PDA appointment normally takes approximately 45 to 50 minutes, with the driving component taking around 35 minutes.
The assessment contains five sections. During three sections, you follow the assessor’s directions through normal traffic. The other two sections involve set exercises based on everyday driving tasks. Each exercise may combine two low-speed manoeuvres.
The assessor looks for consistent observation, planning, responsiveness, signalling, road positioning and vehicle control—not your ability to memorise a test route.
Common preparation mistakes
Many learners concentrate on one manoeuvre and neglect the quality of the complete drive. In lessons, we commonly see late mirror checks, missed head checks, rushed decisions at roundabouts, poor road positioning and speed choices that do not suit the conditions.
A mock assessment can be useful because it shows whether your skills remain consistent when the instructor provides less assistance.
Test-day checklist
Arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment and bring:
Your learner’s permit, or an accepted Category B identification document
Your completed and signed paper logbook, if required
Confirmation that your electronic declaration has been submitted through Learn&Log, if you recorded your hours digitally
A licensed, roadworthy vehicle of the correct class
Before leaving home, check the tyres, lights, indicators, brake lights, horn, windows, mirrors, wipers, washers and dashboard warning lights. Make sure the vehicle is reasonably clean, loose objects are secured and the fuel is not low. Remove the L plates before the assessment.
